Moore the merrier? England captain Leah Williamson.

The comparisons with Paolo Maldini during Sunday’s final may have raised some eyebrows.

The Italian made defending an art form during an incredibly successful and classy career with his club, AC Milan, and country. So it’s high praise indeed to even be mentioned in the same breath.

Yet that’s exactly what happened to Leah Williamson as she produced a flawless display to lead England to victory against Germany.

Given the way she operates and seemingly never needs to go to ground thanks to her impeccable reading of the game, the glittering words about the Lionesses’ captain seemed appropriate.

Her style, ability to remain cooler than the other side of the pillow, while seemingly never give the ball away when playing out from the back, was something those of us who had seen other games in the tournament came to expect.

But to perform that way in such a pressured match oozed class and is why she was being hailed by social media users as a female Bobby Moore.
