Freebridge Community Housing, of King’s Lynn, has submitted a planning application for 40 new homes at a village site.

The housing provider is looking to build a mixture of bungalows and houses on four-and-a-half acres of land to the east of 2 Thieves Bridge Road at Watlington.

A full planning application has been submitted to West Norfolk Council which states the site is allocated within the current local plan.

A public information event was held in September at Watlington Village Hall with feedback which included comments about the impact on the school, the doctors surgery and some traffic concerns. 

A design and access statement submitted with the application states of the new dwellings 37 would be affordable homes – a mix of rented and shared ownership homes.

The development will help to meet the need for affordable homes and  the intention is for priority to be given to “those households with a local connection to Watlington and the surrounding villages”, the document states. 

Proposed are a mix of two bedroom bungalows and two, three and four-bed houses. 

There will be an open space grassed area to include a play space. 

“The surrounding margin will be meadow planted to attract wildlife and increase biodiversity. 

A small community orchard is also prosed within this space,” the statement adds.

Private gardens will be included with the properties and also parking provision.

In support of the application, documents also state the borough council has at least 43 households looking for homes in this area.

Paul Newbold, Freebridge’s director of development told Your Local Paper: “Freebridge are very pleased to have submitted this planning application to the borough council in respect of 40 new homes in the village of Watlington, this comes following an event we held in the village hall at the end of last year to listen to feedback and comments from local people on our proposals for the development.

“In our new five-year strategy Building Better Futures we outline our plans to invest millions of pounds in our existing properties, in addition to investing in more homes and more choice to meet the growing need for good-quality affordable housing throughout the whole of West Norfolk –and this development is an important part of that.

“These new homes will provide new and affordable housing in Watlington, where priority will be given to those households with a local connection to the village and the surrounding area. 

“And, dependent on the planning decision, work on the new homes should start later this year.”
