The body of a retired council official was discovered in Sweden, five months after he went missing while windsurfing.

An inquest held at Norfolk Coroner’s Court in Norwich yesterday (Monday) heard that Chris Bamfield, 65, of Middleton, drowned.

Mr Bamfield, a former executive director at West Norfolk Council, was last seen on Hunstanton beach on November 14 last year.

He was reported missing when he failed to return home. His vehicle was found locked in the car park of the Hunstanton Sailing Club.

A major search was launched involving the RNLI as well as dog units, HM Coastguard boats and helicopters, and Norfolk Lowland Search and Rescue.

Mr Bamfield wasn’t found, but his red and white sail and windsurfing board were later recovered along the coast.

On April 6 was Mr Bamfield was identified by DNA after being found on Stora Korno Beach, Bohusian.

Recording a verdict of accidental death, Norfolk area coroner Yvonne Blake said Mr Bamfield had drowned while windsurfing.
