Harry Wakefield was impressive.

BADMINTON: West Norfolk Junior Badminton player Harry Wakefield earned silver and bronze medals at a national tournament in Essex.

Harry, 16, from Feltwell, was competing at the u17 gold grade event in Redbridge with partner Robin Harper, from Warwickshire.

The boys came through their group, to play a pair from Yorkshire/Berkshire in the quarter-final. After taking the first end 21-5, they won a slightly harder second game 21-15 to reach the semi-final.

There they met Marcus Ip and Felix Wright from Sussex. Ip has just moved from Hong Kong and proved to be a strong opponent. Wakefield and Harper lost the first end 21-17 but fought back to take the second 21-13. That gave them the momentum to win the decider 21-11.

The final was against England’s No.1 boys doubles pair Oliver Butler and Ethan Hosken, from Buckinghamshire, who have not lost a domestic match in four years. The favourites won the first game 21-18 but Wakefield and Harper won the next 21-13. The deciding game was incredibly close, with both pairs taking turns in the lead to reach 20-all. The top seeds just hung on to win 23-21.

Wakefield also played in the mixed doubles at the same event, partnering Sofia Bao from Kent. The pair received a bye into round two, where they beat Dillon Chong and Raye Wan from Berkshire/Notts 24-22, 21-19. They stepped up their game in the quarter-finals, defeating Jai Bin Lee and Lucy Brierley from Surrey/Notts
21-18, 21-11.

They then came up against top seeds Ethan Hosken and Abigail Hong in the semi-final and lost 21-19, 21-16.
