South West Norfolk MP Liz Truss is calling for a resolution to long-term road closures due to flooding at Welney Causeway.

She attended a meeting with representatives from local businesses, councils, the Environment Agency and Norfolk County Council  Highways about the ongoing concerns of flooding and the subsequent road closures – which are sometimes for up to three months at a time.

Belinda Sutton, of Elgoods Brewery, said: “I wish to say a big thank you to Liz for getting things moving again at Welney.

“We have waited many years for the relevant parties to meet and discuss plans to reduce or preferably stop road closures as they have a huge impact on local businesses and residents.

“The meetings so far have been constructive and positive and we are hopeful an effective solution will be found in the near future.”

Ms Truss said: “The flooding of the Welney Causeway causes considerable inconvenience and cost to residents and businesses, as well as the wider Fens tourism offers.

“Everyone recognises that the causeway was designed to flood, however this is an ever increasing occurrence and we need to look to the long term and the implications this will have on local communities.

“At the meeting at the Lamb and Flag in Welney it was agreed by everyone present that we want to secure a more permanent resolution, rather than a quick, short-term fix.”
