BOWLS: Pott Row’s Peter Boldero is enjoying a fantastic start to the season.

He led a team from Downham Market BC to victory in the Norfolk EBA Senior Fours and reached the final of the county two-wood singles and quarter-finals of the four-wood singles.

Boldero and team mates John Gooch, Rocky Lewis and Peter Chestney beat Shouldham BC’s Chris Jones, Peter Lunt, Keith Brand and Keith Camp in the senior fours final. 

Boldero will face Danny Mills, from County Arts in the two-wood final in Norwich, while his four-wood win came courtesy of victory over club colleague Matthew Warnes. Boldero has also been selected to play for Norfolk in the Middleton Cup and the Balcombe Trophy.

Downham’s Jack Wells teamed up with Daniel Seabourne, of Freethorpe BC, to win the Norfolk EBA Junior Pairs. They beat Downham’s Harry Cater and Matthew Warnes 17-7 in the final. 

The pair will join Boldero’s block as Norfolk’s representatives in the National Finals.

Elsewhere in the four-wood singles, Chris Rowe (Downham) beat Tom Baker (Wootton Park) and Max Harrison (Downham) beat David Willgress (Upwell) to progress to the quarter finals. 

The pairs are also at the quarter-final stage. Wells will face Gary Goodrum (Wymondham Dell), Robert Allen (St Lawrence, Tilney) will play Wayne Willgress (Norfolk BC) and Baker will play the 2002 Commonwealth Games gold medallist John Ottaway (Wymondham Dell), all on Friday, July 23.

The triples quarter-finals are due to be played on Tuesday, July 20 and see Vernon Hudson (Wootton Park) play Danny Mills (County Arts), Chris Wright (St Lawrence) face Keith Guy (Wymondham Dell) and Nigel Carter (Upwell) meet  Ottaway (Wymondham Dell).

The area EBF finals were played at Hempton BC near Fakenham on Sunday.

In the two-bowl men’s singles Tom Baker (Wootton Park) beat Liam Leverett (Docking) 21-15 but lost to Barry Footer (King’s Lynn) 21-10 in the four-bowl singles.

Wootton Park’s Andy Sayer and Richard Bunton had a walkover against Fakenham’s Colin Warnes and Jack Wells in the two-bowl pairs.

The two-bowl triples saw Baker, Richie Blyth and Ady Folker (Wootton Park) win 25-14 against Brian Britton, Simon Libovitch and Peter Tuddenham, of South Creake.

Liam Leverett, of Docking, beat Laurence Scott (Lynn) 20-15 in the Champion of Champions, and there was victory for Wootton’s Sayer in the men’s senior singles, seeing off club mate Richard Bunton 21-16.

Mike Smith and Vernon Hudson, of Wootton Park, emerged 18-10 winners over Bryan Ledgerwood and Bryan Playford (Docking) in the men’s senior pairs while, in the senior mixed pairs Anne and John Chambers (Albert Victor)enjoyed a 20-18 success against Bryn and Carol Playford (Docking).

Wootton’s Sayer and Jane Watson teamed up to beat Bridget Hunter and Laurence Scott (Lynn) 21-15 in the mixed pairs.

The U25 singles title went to Regan Simper (Wootton Park) after scheduled opponent Matthew Warnes (Fakenham) conceded.

Also representing the western area at the County Championships will be Andy Sayer, Mike Smith and Richard Bunton in the three-bowl triples, Andy Sayer in the Secretaries Singles and Sayer, Jane Watson and Richard Bunton in the mixed triples.

The winners will represent the western area of Norfolk in the semi-finals of the county championships on Sunday at Great Plumstead.
