ATHLETICS: West Norfolk AC athletes have been returning to action as the lifting of lockdown restrictions continues.
Club members and friends of the Saturday morning Parkrun event before Covid arrived have been involved in a ‘Non Parkrun’ event with last weekend being the third outing.
Runners set off in groups of six in line with Covid restrictions with the main aim to get fit again for the racing season and good times were had all round.
Club legend and V45 athlete Neil Watson was fastest last weekend with 20.09mins, putting him joint second overall with Gareth Hunt from Ryston. The overall best so far is Neil Stapleton with a time of 19.57.
Young talents Harry Malton and Henry Gosnell, in 23.14 and 23.52, are seventh and 12th respectively on the overall list.
Long-standing member and former coach Kate Bamfield has been taking part.
This event will keep going until UK Parkrun is back at The Walks.
There have been many Open events organised over the past few weeks. The Norfolk Athletics Friday Evening Open Series had its third meeting last week, while WNAC athletes have also taken part in the Loughborough & England Athletics Throws Pathway Invitational, Birchfield Harriers NAL Warm-Up event and Peterborough & Nene Valley AC open graded events.
U20s athlete Alfie Williams had a great season opener with a personal best and an England schools National qualifying distance at Loughborough with a distance of 13.94m.
His brother, U20 Charlie Williams, currently studying in Loughborough, had his season opener at Nuneaton on Sunday with a 37m throw in the discus.
Senior Jack Pishorn delivered a season’s best in the discus with a 19.66m throw.
In Peterborough on Sunday, U15s athlete Amelia Gooding completed the 75m hurdles in 8.75sec and reached 1.45m in the high jump, both of which were personal best performances.
Senior athlete Tayla Benson ran a 61.0sec 400m, a season best.
At UEA Norwich, u11 athlete Myley Gilboy achieved a personal best in the 75m flat in 12.1 seconds, finishing second, following that up with third the following week in 12.3.
U13 Charlie Broad achieved a personal best in the long jump of 4.11m, while senior Lucy Edwards jumped a season’s best 4.65m in the long jump.
U20 Marcus Holt ran a strong 200m of 24.8 to earn a personal best, finishing fourth.
Others competing at Norwich, with season bests, who have associations with West Norfolk AC were: Vets55 Michael Protheroe, shot, 8.40; U23 senior Nathan Protheroe, long jump, 6.07; Senior Hannah Brown, 200m, 26.2; and u17 Lucy Oakley, shot, 10.53, and also a season’s best at Nuneaton of 11.38m.
