Rail passengers with unused travel vouchers are to be given extra time to redeem them to ensure they are not left out of pocket from Covid-related restrictions, the government announced this week.

Thousands of passengers with Rail Travel Vouchers which have expired or are due to expire at the end of June, will get an additional six months after their original expiry date to redeem them to recognise the fact most passengers were unable to use them during the second and third national lockdowns, the Department for Transport said.

Transport secretary Grant Shapps said the extension would ensure passengers with travel vouchers were not penalised for following government advice.

Rail services are expected to get busier with restrictions slowly being lifted, but people are still advised to keep travel to a minimum.
