FOOTBALL: West Norfolk clubs enjoyed a successful day in the Norfolk County FA Junior Cup.

The return of grassroots football saw seven of the area’s teams progress into the third round, with three prevailing after penalty shoot-outs.

The goals flew in at Gayton United, where the hosts eventually beat Norwich Eagles 3-1 in the decider after the sides had drawn 4-4. Sam Loomes, Chez Rust, Adrian Hill and an opponent got the Gayton goals.

Dersingham Rovers were 4-2 victors over Tacolneston after a 2-2 draw and Snettisham saw off Long Stratton Reserves 3-1 after a 0-0 draw.

Despite the goalless 90 minutes, the match was a cracker and played at a frantic pace. The tie was decided when Long Stratton hit a post and Kieran O’Grady made a fine save, paving the way for Kenny Rushton’s superbly struck penalty to put Snettisham through.

Andy Stables, Tom Rushton, Callum Swan and veteran, Mark Sainty shared Snettisham’s man of the match award.

Daniel King 2 and Nathan Cross struck for Castle Acre Swifts as they gained a 3-2 win at Wymondham Town Reserves, a result matched by Birchwood at home to Mulbarton Reserves where Dion King proved to be the match-winner with a brace.

Goals from Heacham Reserves’ Ahmed Rhaouti and Fletcher Toll saw off UEA 2-1, while KLSC enjoyed a bye after scheduled opponents Aylsham Reserves withdrew.

Two West Norfolk teams fell by the wayside, with Feltwell United going down 2-1 at home to Attleborough Town Reserves and Reffley pulling out of their clash with Earsham.

AFC Lynn Napier were beaten 3-1 at Wells Town Reserves in the Anglian Combination Offside Trust Minor Cup.
