The swimming pool at Hunstanton’s Smithdon High School could be knocked down under plans submitted to West Norfolk Council.

Planning consent is needed for the demolition because the school gym, built in the 1950s, is a listed building.

A report supporting the application said the pool had been unused for many years and did not meet current safety standards.

“Maintaining the swimming pool is now economically unviable,” the report said.

“The single storey swimming pool is not included in the original construction of the 1950s and which forms the basis of the grade II* listing.”

The Downs Road school, which opened in 1954, was listed in 1993 and is designed in the “Butalist” style.

It underwent a £1m renovation last year, improvements to facilities including two computer suites.
