Norfolk County Council plans to upgrade 15,000 main road street lights across the county this year as part of its  drive to become carbon neutral by 2030.

Under a two-year programme, around 39 per cent of council-owned street lights have already been replaced with more energy-efficient LED lights.

The scheme has already seen CO2 emissions cut by 1,200 tonnes and many of the LEDs can be controlled remotely, saving on staff time and travel, the council said.

It is estimated that each new LED light uses around 70 per cent less energy.
