MOTOR SPORT: West Norfolk F1 racer George Russell has been chosen as the driver to stand in for world champion Lewis Hamilton at this weekend’s Sakhir Grand Prix in Bahrain.
Mercedes picked out Russell as the man to fill Hamilton’s boots following the latter’s positive test for coronavirus.
Following discussions, Russell’s team for this year, Williams Racing, agreed to the move, which presents a huge opportunity for the 22-year-old.
Russell said: “Obviously, nobody can replace Lewis, but I’ll give my all for the team in his absence from the moment I step in the car.
“I’m really looking forward to the opportunity and can’t wait to get out on track this week.”
Last Sunday, Russell finished 12th at the Bahrain Grand Prix, the venue also hosting this weekend’s race.
