Matt Calvert fires home for Downham Town to give them an opening day win at Haverhill Borough...

FOOTBALL: A two-goal blast midway through the second half proved crucial as Downham Town went down to a 4-2 defeat at the Memorial Field in the Thurlow Nunn League on Wednesday.

Ashley Jarvis and Jack Robinson had given Fakenham the half-time advantage but the hosts pulled one back.

Robinson and Jarvis then scored again within two minutes of each other and Downham’s late strike was mere consolation.

Town fielded three of their new signings in Saturday’s 1-0 win at Haverhill Borough, with another one on the bench. Joe Jackson, Amon Kutsirayi and Alfie Moulder were in the starting XI, with Manny Okpara among the substitutes.

Long-serving Matt Calvert got the only goal of the game, following up from George Sturrock’s free-kick to score.

One goal for the away team was also decisive back at Downham, where new tenants King’s Lynn Town u21s went down to Framlingham Town, despite creating the majority of chances. Joe Berry got the only goal of the game after 53 minutes.
