David MacQueen at Sheffield.

ATHLETICS: The weekend’s report from Ryston Runners AC almost constitutes a microcosm of the club’s range of activities, as it features road and cross country as well as track and field activities.

Having qualified for the England National Indoor Championships, David MacQueen (u15B) headed to the English Institute for Sport in Sheffield for the event.

A strong run in his heat of 7.74 seconds saw him qualify for the semi-final, in which he ran 7.75.

Although this was not enough to get him through to the final, it was a great experience to be racing against the fastest boys in the country in his age group.

The Tarpley 20-mile race, such a popular road event for those preparing for spring marathons that the entry is usually full by early autumn of the previous year, featured three Ryston members among the 321 finishers.

Kevin Farquhar was 48th in 2hrs 26mins 41secs, Anna Smith 99th (2.44.01/fourth W40) and Irena Marcinek (122nd 2.49.09/8th W40).

Sue Tuff and Jon Benstead were Ryston’s only representatives at the Sublime Peterborough Winter 10K, finishing 378th and 381st in 69.17 and 69.19 respectively out of almost 450 runners.

The results from the Athletics Norfolk Cross Country Team challenge have been announced. In the debut year of this competition, Ryston featured in the honours in all four categories, winning the men’s B team section and finishing second in the men’s A and women’s A and B categories.

The prizes for this series are due to be presented at the county awards evening on April 1 in Norwich.
