INLINE SKATING: Wisbech Speed Skaters kick-started their 2020 season with a stunning display in Derby at the East Midlands club’s indoor race event.

The 11-strong team from the West Norfolk-based club showed a masterful display in each of the six categories.

The opening flying lap sprints saw many of the team gain personal best times, with Kirby Barker showing the biggest improvement, by a whopping two seconds.

Coach Mike McInerney was fastest across all categories, with a time of 9.619 seconds.

In Cat 5, rookie youngster Paris Sherwood proved unfazed by more experienced skaters and finished each of her races.

In Cat 4, Leah Barker led from start to finish in both her races, briefly dicing with rookie Kieran Taylor for first place.

Taylor proved a force to be reckoned with for the rest of the pack as he fought hard for two second places.

In Cat 3, Taylor Barker was fighting at the front in the first race and led comfortably for the whole of the second.

Behind him, his younger brother Kirby pipped rival Ethan Smith on the line to take third place. In the second race, the brothers narrowly missed an on-track spill to take first and second place respectively.

In Cat 2, Pupil Boys British Champion Arthur Buckler led comfortably all races.

In two fast Cat 1 races, McInerney took victories in both. Flynn McGurk finished third in the first race but an on-track incident in the second race saw him lose a strong second position to finish sixth.

The masters category saw David Billington and Karl Bates take a win apiece. Jo Tidman was third in the ladies races.

The team took home a total of 14 first places, eight seconds and seven third-place finishes with Barker, Taylor Barker, Buckler, Billington and McInerney taking overall category wins.

The club’s next race is a home event at Skaters Roller Rink in Walpole Highway next Saturday, February 29, 9am. Entry is free to spectators.
