A new unit has been opened at King’s Lynn’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital to allow more emergency patients to be seen who might otherwise have been admitted over night.
The Same Day Emergency Care unit will be open from 8.30am to 12.30am Monday to Friday and 9am to 7pm at weekends.
The unit has been opened to extend the Ambulatory Emergency Care (AEC) unit and has added the capacity to see another 25 patients to the existing up to 40 patients.
The new unit has monitors to measure heart rate and blood pressure and results from blood samples can be turned around in less than 20 minutes.
Matron Debbie Longmuir said the aim was to have a three to four-hour potential assessment time to avoid patients having to stay in hospital when it was safe to allow them to return to the comfort of their own homes.
