FOOTBALL: A second-half surge secured all the points for Thurlow
Nunn League Division One North promotion chasers Downham Town on Saturday.
After being held goalless at half-time by Cornard United in a fantastic game to watch, with great energy and some really cutting football at times, Town cut loose in the second half to win 3-0.
The visitors’ young goalkeeper James Askew pulled off a number of exceptional saves to keep Cornard in the game but relentless pressure eventually paid off for Town.
Ben Baxter-Hunt broke the deadlock after 64 minutes and Matt Calvert doubled the advantage after 78.
The best was left until last when Calvert dummied man of the match Simon Bird’s cross to allow Robbie Priddle to sweep home the third goal in stoppage time.
• King’s Lynn Town were knocked out of the Eastern Region Women’s League Cup on Sunday.
A late goal from Premier Division hosts Royston Town sent them to a 3-2 defeat.
The hosts took an early lead but player of the match Tiffany Forshaw levelled things with a stunning 35-yard free-kick. Royston regained the lead after the break but Katie Ward made it 2-2 before the late decider.
