FOOTBALL: Adam Marriott celebrated being named National League North Player of the Month with a goal in a 3-0 win against Blyth Spartans on Saturday.
That took his league tally to 21 for the season and saw the Linnets open a three-point lead over York at the top of the table.
It was a day of celebrations for the Linnets, with manager Ian Culverhouse also being crowned the division’s manager of the month.
A sixth consecutive win came with additional goals from Chris Henderson and Michael Gash but it was the defence that Culverhouse chose to highlight.
“I’m pleased for the back four,” he said. “That’s our third consecutive clean sheet. We’re starting to put a good run of them together.”
If it had not have been for visiting goalkeeper Zach Hemming and the hosts wasting some good chances, it could have been a rout but Culverhouse was satisfied with the result and said: “It was never going to be an easy game. They’re fighting for their lives and have got some good players. We are punching well above our weight but just keep delivering every time we go out. We won’t get carried away, we will drop points along the way but we’re enjoying the ride.”
The Linnets welcome National League side Dover to The Walks tomorrow, 3pm, in the first round of the FA Trophy.
