Minister Stevie Brooks proved she is a cut above when she had her head shaved to raise money for her church.

Mrs Brooks is the licensed lay minister at Wiggenhall St Mary Magdelene Church and her hair-raising feat raised £554 towards the restoration of the church’s rare medieval stained glass.

The 15th century stained glass includes about 40 figures  and is unusual because it includes depictions of largely unknown saints, including St Callistus, St Britius, St Leger and St Romanus.

Mrs Brooks decided to take the plunge after emergency open heart surgery left her unable to undertake her usual fundraising activities and she braved the shave after Sunday’s service in front of a congregation of 35 to 40.

She said: “They all clapped and said it looked quite nice. I can’t have another bad hair day now, so that’s good.

“I’d like to thank everyone who sponsored me, I’m very pleased with what I raised.”

The church will hold its annual Christmas fair from 2pm to 4pm tomorrow (Saturday), with stalls, a raffle, cakes and a visit from Father Christmas.
