RUGBY UNION: A late try condemned West Norfolk to defeat in their Women’s National Championship East One match at Shelford on Saturday evening.
The floodlit match on the Cambridge club’s 3G pitch saw the hosts prevail 24-17.
West took a sixth-minute lead with a try from forward of the match Mary Hegarty, converted by Zoe Sharp.
Two tries, one converted, by the hosts saw them go ahead before Hegarty again took the ball in hand and drove home to even the score to 12-12 going into half-time.
Strong leadership from captain Amber Wadlow cemented West’s resolve, despite the first try of the second half coming from Shelford.
West pressurised the Shelford defence and the forwards pushed another try over the line to level the score at 17-17 with eight minutes to go. However, in the dying moments of the game, Shelford snatched the points.
The back of the match award went to Lucy Shaw, with Kelly Saunders putting in a strong performance, despite playing out of position at full back.
