Norwich City legends Darren Huckerby and Iwan Roberts take centre stage with host Gavin Caney at a packed first Caney’s Corner Live evening. Pictures: PAUL TIBBS.

Oh what a night!

It wasn’t late December back in ’63 but mid-April back in ’19 was equally worth singing about.

Thursday, April 18, 2019, will forever be a date etched in my memory because it’s when what felt like a ridiculous dream – hosting an event in my name – became a reality.

I’ve just about come back down from cloud nine but I still remain humble and honoured to have been supported by so many people to make the first (and not last) Caney’s Corner Live a huge success (if I say so myself).

I thanked so many people on the night so I’m not going to do that again. In my defence, I haven’t got the space either. But from the moment Norwich City legends Iwan Roberts and Darren Huckerby joined me on stage at the Duke’s Head Hotel in King’s Lynn, I knew we were in for a cracker.

The ex-footballers were funny, insightful and passionate and their banter hit the high notes all evening. The silly little games we devised went down equally well as the crowd lapped up each laugh and (poor) joke.

The messages from former team-mates were more than worth the effort to get hold of and questions from the floor were equally impressive.

The turnout from City fans and members of the public honestly blew us all away, including the man who, along with Gary Bush, backed me to turn this surreal idea into reality.

Your Local Paper managing director Alan Taylor said: “We were absolutely delighted with the response of both ticket sales and on the night itself.

“The interaction with Iwan and Darren and the crowd was superb with some great banter. Gavin knows his sport and delivered a great performance on the night himself.

“Watch out for more Caney’s Corner Live news to see who is next in the hot seat. It was a great local event for local sport fans from West Norfolk’s number one community newspaper for sport.”

The night ended with the audience breaking out into song – a truly fitting end for what was a smash hit evening’s entertainment.

  •  Keep your eyes peeled for news of the next Caney’s Corner Live event!

It’s YOUR LOCAL PAPER and, much like Caney’s Corner in print, Caney’s Corner Live belongs to YOU. So please let our columnist and host Gavin know what you thought of the event and who you would like to see come to West Norfolk in the future.

You can do that by emailing gavin@yourlocalpaper.co.uk or Tweeting @GavinCaney

Raffle prizes just the ticket

The raffle not only provided a couple of hilarious moments, but gave a packed crowd the chance to win some fantastic prizes.

So a huge thanks goes to everyone who bought tickets and Your Local Paper’s Mark Stanford for being roped into selling them to help out the YLP ‘event team’ of myself, Alan Taylor, Gary Bush and Paul Tibbs.

An even bigger thanks goes to the following for supplying gifts: Prior’s Butchers (£20 voucher), Duke’s Head (afternoon tea for two), Darren Huckerby (signed boot), Darren Huckerby and Iwan Roberts (10x signed, by both, Hucks autobiographies + 3x signed prints), YLP (Laurent Perrier Rose + 2x glasses), Heacham Manor (4-ball round of golf), Alive Leisure (2x 1-week Platinum Passes for any centre), Alive Leisure (£50 Corn Exchange vouchers), Thornham Deli (Champagne afternoon tea for two) and Jeremy Allen, St James’ Place Wealth Management (bottle of Merlot).
