Downham Market pupils came together to cheer on the patron saint of England.

Around 120 children from Hillcrest Primary School and Nelson Academy gathered at the Town Square to celebrate St George’s Day on Tuesday.

They cheered and waved their England flags as they watched a re-enactment unfold based on the legend of St George.

The story told how Desperado the Dragon of Hilgay Fen comes to Downham once a year to cause havoc and disrupt the market.

Councillor John Doyle played St George and councillor Frank Daymond donned the dragon costume.

A spokesman for Downham Town Council said: “The children thoroughly enjoyed it all and joined in the pantomime-style cheering of ‘he’s behind you’.

“I spoke to some of the children and they thought it was really funny.”
