BADMINTON: Harry Wakefield struck gold at the under 15 Gold event in Buckinghamshire.
The 13-year-old West Norfolk Junior Badminton player, who is sponsored by Top Spin Tennis, played with regular mixed partner, Suffolk’s Chloe Dennis.
The pair, who are ranked No.3 in England in their age group, have been pushing the top players in the last few tournaments but never beaten them.
However, they struck gold this time, winning their first top grade tournament.
The East Anglian pair had a bye into the second round where they beat a partnership from Berkshire and Nottinghamshire 21-7, 21-16.
The quarter-final was a much harder match and they came through with a 21-18, 21-19 win to face top seeds Oliver Butler and Tiffany Yang from Oxford/Hampshire in the semi-final.
A tough match saw Wakefield and Dennis take the first end 21-16. The top seeds stepped up their game to take the next 21-17 to force a decider.
Despite the higher ranked pair pushing them all the way, the Norfolk/Suffolk combination caused an upset, winning 21-17 to reach the final.
In the final they faced Fred Robertson and Grace Sachdeva from Yorkshire, who had beaten the second seeds.
This match was not as difficult as the semi-final. After taking a close first game 21-19, Wakefield and Dennis raced away in the second, taking it 21-11 to win.
