Pupils at Greyfriars Academy in King’s Lynn have helped to officially launch this year’s Bespak Mini GEAR.

Taking place before the start of the Asda Foundation Grand East Anglia Run (GEAR) 10K on Sunday, May 5, fun runners of all ages and abilities have been invited to take part and help deserving charities.

The popular 1.2-mile run encourages families to get active with entries available to participants over the age of three.

Every finisher will receive a goodie bag and a commemorative medal.

The family run will start at 9.45am from Lynn’s Tuesday Market Place. It is a popular feature of this year’s Run For All calendar – part of the Jane Tomlinson legacy.

Athlete and fundraiser Jane amassed £1.85m for children’s and cancer charities by taking part in incredible endurance challenges before she died from cancer aged 43 in 2007.

The mini GEAR will support Norfolk-based children’s  bereavement charity, Nelson’s Journey, an official partner charity for the event.

Sophie Berry, Nelson’s Journey funding and marketing manager, said: “We are so happy to be a part of this amazing community event and incredibly grateful that runners of all abilities will be lacing-up their trainers to support us this year.

“Fundraising is for everyone and it’ll be great to see people taking part in this fun run to help us continue to deliver our free support for bereaved children and young people across Norfolk providing positive futures and bringing back smiles.”

Veronika Lothian, vice- president of quality and regulatory at the North Lynn- based run sponsors, said: “The Bespak Mini GEAR is a fantastic event for our local community and is a great way to support our local schools.

“Prizes are allocated to the first, second and third placed schools to enable them to buy educational equipment.

“This is based on the percentage of pupils participating in the event, from their total school roll.

“The total prize fund this year is £2,100, split between first prize £1,000, second prize £700 and third prize £400.”

Sponsorship and corporate manager, Nicola Christian, of organisers Run For All, said: “The Bespak Mini GEAR run is always such a fun, friendly and – most importantly – inclusive event.

“It is an event for everyone so if you or your child has any special considerations, please contact us – we’ll be happy to help them enjoy the experience.

“With the mini GEAR taking place on the same day as the GEAR 10K, the atmosphere is going to be  fantastic. We’re really looking forward to embracing King’s Lynn’s great community spirit.”

Last year’s 13th annual 10K and fun run attracted thousands of runners. Conditions were the  hottest to date as the country experienced a heat wave.
