Younger pupils at Nelson Academy in Downham Market have taken part in a traditional Christingle service with a modern twist.

Around 200 children aged four to seven attended the service at Downham Market Methodist Church as part of the school’s Christmas celebrations.

The centuries old tradition of decorating an orange with ribbon and fruit was modernised with the use of glow sticks in place of candles. The 45-minute service included three songs.

Youngsters also performed a Nativity play in school for family members and, as part of festive events in the lead up to the end of term, they visited the Princess Theatre at Hunstanton to see the panto.
