Families came together this week for a celebration of The Gruffalo in Gaywood’s own “deep dark wood”.

The Friends of Plantation Wood recreated the much-loved children’s tale for a half-term Gruffalo hunt, bringing animal characters including the fox and owl to life with young actors.

Around 60 people gathered for the event on Tuesday, meeting at the entrance next to Howard Infant School.

Children were fitted with handmade ears and had whiskers added with face paint ready to play the part of the quick-witted mouse.

Scripts were handed-out before the large group, including buggies and pushchairs,  headed into the woods in search of the purple spined-creature.

Families read the words out loud as the story unfolded and different costumed characters appeared along the trail.

The Gruffalo himself made an appearance and later posed for pictures with the little mice.

There were hot drinks and homemade chocolate Gruffalo cupcakes waiting for everyone after the trail, all served by the volunteers.

Created by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, the award-winning book has delighted children around the world since it was first published in 1999.

The Friends of Plantation Wood hold regular community events and clean-ups at the Woodland Trust site.
