Downham Market Post Office could re-open next week after two family deaths and a serious illness forced the temporary closure of the High Street branch for around a month.

Post mistress Parvin Begum said she hoped to re-open towards the end of the week. She apologised for the inconvenience caused to customers and also thanked them for their understanding.

“We have been through a lot as a family,” she said explaining they had lost family members from her husband’s side and then shortly after, her father had suffered a brain haemorrhage and strokes and was critically ill in hospital in London. Mrs Begum said they had arranged for cover for the business but said they had been let down.

“People have been very nice. We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused but want to thank people. We appreciate their support and understanding of our situation,” she said.

Notices were posted in the branch window and customers have been directed to Wimbotsham and Denver branches.
