A King’s Lynn company has won the Five Star Tradestand Award for the fifth year running at the prestigious RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

Crane Garden Buildings, based in Narford Road, was awarded for its display of two garden buildings.

The firm displayed its superior shed and pavilion garden room, both made from northern Scandinavian Redwood.

The family-run business, has been hand-making timber buildings for more than 40 years.

Company partners James and Nick Crane said: “We wouldn’t be able to do it without our excellent manufacturing, installation and gardening teams, so thank you to them for all their hard work.”

The buildings mirror each other nicely design-wise, as they are both painted in Farrow & Ball’s Old White, and Pointing was used for the doors, windows and veranda of the Garden Room.

A rustic, country elegance was also achieved through the use of Georgian windows, cedar shingle roofing tiles, and weatherboard cladding.

The flower beds were created using low-height English grown coppiced silver birch, and inside Mr. Mortin and his team chose plants to reflect the wonderful colours of spring: plenty of fresh greens have been used with various grasses, hostas and ferns, as well as bright pinks, purples, whites and yellows with flag irises, foxgloves, a Blue Star aquilegia, dianthus, primula, as well as both French and English lavenders for fragrance. The borders have also been framed with little gems like wild strawberry plants, and various succulents.

Peter Mortin explains why Chelsea is such a big event in Crane’s yearly calendar: “Chelsea is such a brilliant platform because we’re able to showcase an achievable, realistic garden with our buildings, leaving our visitors inspired to create something similar in their own gardens.”

The Pavilion Garden Room has been earmarked to return to Crane’s head office in Norfolk, to be admired and used as a show building.

James and Nick Crane, the company partners, wanted to thank the hardworking teams in Norfolk for their 5th win in 5 years, saying: “We wouldn’t be able to do it without our excellent manufacturing, installation and gardening teams, so thank you to them for all their hard work.”
