Pupils show why they love West Norfolk at the flag for the commonwealth ceremony in Downham Market with the town’s Deputy Mayor Yvonne Thompson.

Downham Market joined other towns in staging countrywide celebrations to Fly the Flag for the Commonwealth on Monday.

Town crier Ray Wales read a message from the general secretary of the Commonwealth  and the town’s Deputy Mayor Yvonne Thompson read the Commonwealth affirmation.

Pupils from Nelson Academy, Downham Preparatory School, Hillcrest primary and Mrs Thompson’s grandson, helped her to raise the flag at the town hall.

Mrs Thompson said: “How enjoyable it is to carry out this important civic event accompanied by delightful children who were polite, engaging and excellent ambassadors for their schools.”

The town council has organised a Fly the Flag for the Commonwealth celebration since its inception four years ago.
