Fire crackers and lion dancing have welcomed in the Chinese New Year.

Members of the West Norfolk and District Chinese Association marked the beginning of the Year of the Dog early at Gaywood Primary School last Sunday.

Around 170 guests, including West Norfolk Mayor Carol Bower, enjoyed entertainment, a raffle and food.

Children and parents also took part in a martial arts display.

Event organiser Kwai Li said: “There were a lot of happy children. They received presents from the God of Wealth who is similar to the western Father Christmas. They also got a goodie bag including a fortune cookie.

“We had four long tables of food from different parts of China, Malaysia and Singapore.

“There was a surprise display from the Kung Fu master.

“I think the mayor had a wonderful time with us.

“Everybody helped to decorate and clear up the hall too.”

A total of £441 was raised from the raffle which will be donated to Chinese Mandarin classes which are held at the hall.
