A bid for smoke free sidelines has kicked off the new season at Shouldham Youth Football Club.
The initiative, #smokefreesidelines, aims to encourage spectators on the sidelines to stub out cigarettes, especially where impressionable young people can see it.
Hard hitting graphics accompany the campaign which was launched in July at Norfolk’s largest tournament, the FDC Youth Cup, by NHS Norwich Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), Smokefree Norfolk and Norfolk FA, with the support of Norfolk District Councils.
In the last two months 12 clubs have signed up to become champions of the scheme for their district.
Phil Riedlinger, chairman of Shouldham Youth FC, said: “We are so pleased as a club to be involved in such a positive scheme.
“Being a member of a youth football club is so much more than just the game and we welcome the opportunity to help promote healthy living in West Norfolk for the players and their families.”
Around 35 per cent of children who smoke begin around the age of 12, with 90 per cent of those starting because a family member smokes, or due to peer pressure.
