Branching out into a new line of business has earned a West Norfolk family firm a top Royal Horticultural Society award.

A gazebo made by Shernborne-based The Iron Garden was part of a stand by Suffolk business Fernatix, previous gold winners at the annual London show.

The stand not only bagged a gold floral marquee award at the Hampton Court Palace show, but also won a New Design award in recognition of its originality, use of staging techniques and materials.

The Wrought Iron and Brass Bed Company launched its The Iron Garden business in February.

Marketing director Harry Thompson said: “Being in beds for more than 10 years, last year we decided it was time to diversify. As a family, we love the outdoors and having our own iron fabrication and powder coating plant, the ideas of what we could do ran wild but the concept of an iron gazebo ran with more enthusiasm.”

The gazebo was spotted when representatives from Fernatix visited the company to collect a bed and asked if they could use it on their stand.

Company director Amanda Oldfield said launching a new product was a nervous experience but receiving such praise was “hopefully a sign of good things to come”.
