THIS summer’s Downham Games was launched on Wednesday at a Wimbotsham jazzercise session.

To be held on June 11 on the Memorial Fields in Downham Market, the event will feature both traditional and some new games.

This year’s enhanced games will also see an emphasis on  attracting more girls and women to take part.

And the national inspirational This Girl Can theme, developed by Sport England to encourage female participation in sport and dispel body shape myths,  will be incorporated in the event.

Organiser Frances Rayner said: “It is important to keep some of the favourite activities but to look to enhance the event year-on-year with new opportunities that individuals and families can come and try.”

Frances said female participation has been traditionally less than males and the aim is to encourage women to come and have a go.

There will be two fitness sessions with Downham Jazzercise at 10.30am and 1pm with a warm-up for the athletics competition.

“We want to encourage as many people as possible to come and join in,” said Frances.

The games will also include archery, cycling, tennis, cricket, football, Nerf gun wars and the traditional athletics.

Competition is open to anyone aged eight and over. There will also be athletics activities for youngsters under the age of seven. There will be a £1 charge per child and £2 charge per adult to take part and everyone will receive a medal.

A new event will be the first Norfolk Wife Carrying Championships, open to anyone over 18 who can carry a friend or partner over 400m. Entry fee will be £16.50 a couple.

Trophies, which have been sponsored by Your Local Paper, will be presented at 2pm.  More activities will also be organised and information will be updated on the Downham Games Facebook page.

Sponsors are West Norfolk Community Sports, Alive Sports Development, Downham Town Council, Arbuckles and Downham Tandoori.
