Wasps trio double up to sting leaders


TABLE TENNIS: IBA Protect King’s Lynn League Barrett Doubles leaders TopSpynn suffered a 5-4 defeat at Wasps.

Karl and Ross Brown were the only pairing unbeaten on the night, but the home team put on a complete team performance.

TopSpynn’s other point came from the Karl/Phil Brown pairing. Wasps’ points came from Derek Kiddle/Tomaz Simka and Mike Crowson/Simka, who won two games each. The other point came from Kiddle/Crowson.

Second-placed Ziggys also had a tough night at Avengers team but went home with a 5-4 win. Home pairing Don Dixon and Keith Phillips went the night unbeaten and Avengers’ other point came from Dixon/Richard Mussett.

For Ziggys, Gary Hewitt/Alan Nicholls and Steve Barrett/Hewitt both won two games. Nicholls and Barrett also paired up to take a win.

Bottom team Heacham A enjoyed some close games against St James, but suffered a 7-2 loss.

Mike Cooper, playing up from Division One, and Leigh Macdonald paired up for the home team’s points.

The Owen Turner/Mark Pearman partnership completed a maximum for St James and both Turner and Pearman paired up with Alan Jones to win two games apiece.

Ambit Projects won their first Barrett match of the season, squeezing out a 5-4 victory against Heacham.

The James Patterson/Vaugham Parker pairing won all three of their games for the visitors and Patterson paired up with the busy Cooper for the other point. Ambits’ stars were Rob Rix/Lewis Baldock, who won two together, as did Rix/Jeff Chung. Baldock and Chung paired up for the other point.

Pegg Scaffolding had a 5-4 win at home to Wisbech Wizards. Peter Pegg/Danny Vertigan won twice and Pegg teamed up with Martin Skipper for another two. Vertigan/Skipper completed the nap hand of wins.

The Division One Barrett Doubles match between Paul’s Driving School and Wasps saw another tight match with the home team came out on top 5-4.

Trevor Mason and Paul Barrett did the damage with a maximum and Steve Hunt paired up with Barrett and Mason to win a game with each partner.

Paul Reed and Dave Hughes won two of their three games for the visitors and Igor Scekalevs paired up with Reed and Hughes to win another two.

The Challenge Cup is down to the semi-final stage and the draw is: St James v Ziggys and Pegg Scaffolding v TopSpynn.

The Handicap Cup quarter-final stage sees: Paul’s Driving School v Ziggys, Pegg Scaffolding v Wasps 2, St James v TopSpynn and Wasps v Wisbech Wizards.

l A clash between two of the top three teams in the Heacham League went the way of BT Victory, who saw off Adrian’s Allstars 7-2.

Some cracking games in the all doubles format saw the regular Victory trio of Jason Carter, Mick Minns and Mike Nobes beat Adrian’s Allstars’ Simon Rayner, Steve Hales and Mary-Ann Woodhouse.

The Allstars won the first and third games to be 2-2 after four games, but the final five games all went the way of Victory.

Ringstead Raiders seem to enjoy the doubles format and continued their good form as Paul Humeniuk, Mike Patterson and Mark Hipkin beat the Sedgeford Stars’ team of super subs Jacob Hewson, Mike Wade and Kerry Smith 8-1.

The league leaders were up against Spivs Specials and the opposing trio of Chris Griggs with Tim and Jeff Race found it tough going against the Heroes’ side of Rob and Tom Yarrow and Graham Keeley.

There were just two four enders with all the rest completed in three ends as the Heroes came away with a 9-0 win.

They were just a point ahead of second placed Adrian’s Allstars at the end of the previous week’s matches, but now sit eight points clear, albeit form one game more. The teams are due to meet the week after next.
