Drumming, shouts and cheers filled the air as crowds gathered to celebrate the Chinese New Year in King’s Lynn.

Record numbers of people attended the annual event in the Vancouver Quarter, welcoming the year of the rooster in style with a performance by the James Uglow Lion Group.

More than 400 pupils from schools, including Gaywood Community Primary, Whitefriars and Eastgate Academy watched the dancing and dozens more shoppers stopped to enjoy the spectacle last Friday.

David Blackmore, marketing and events assistant at the Vancouver Quarter, said:  “A huge thank you to the performers from the James Uglow Lion Group for returning to the Vancouver Quarter and helping us to welcome in the Chinese New Year in style.

“Their energetic performance drew the largest crowd we’ve ever had for our Chinese New Year celebrations and we were delighted to see so many get into the spirit of the dance and join in, too.”

Downham Market held its own celebrations with a dragon dance in the town square last Friday.

The event, organised by the town council, was attended by pupils from the town’s Nelson Academy and Hillcrest Primary School.
