FOOTBALL: For the second week running, captain Leon Mettam was the King’s Lynn Town saviour.

A week after grabbing a late leveller at home to Stratford to secure a 1-1 draw, Mettam did it again, striking in the 90th minute to rescue an Evo-Stik Southern League point in a 2-2 draw with Hayes & Yeading United.

The home side started brightly with Jacek Zielonka heading straight at goalkeeper Louis Wells from Jordan Yong’s cross,

This was followed up by chances for Lee Stevenson and an early sight at goal for Mettam.

Lynn deservedly took the lead after 16 minutes. The Hayes back line stood off Stevenson and he threaded an inch-perfect pass through to Mettam, who struck a sweet shot past Wells.

Alex Street was called on after the half-time break to keep the Linnets in front. Tim Gilbey’s cross was headed back across goal by Melford Simpson for Lloyd Macklin to prod goalwards but he was denied by a point blank reaction save from Street.

Hayes got their reward when a silly free-kick was given away on the edge of the box and Sam Humphrey’s effort rebounded for Gilbey to score.

That sparked the visitors into life and they took the lead just a few minutes later. A poor clearance by Street played Lynn into trouble. Johnathan Dos Santos collected the ball and went on a mazy run seeing of tackles from Ryan Fryatt and Sam Gaughran before nutmegging Dan Quigley and tucking the ball past Street.

The equaliser came late again when a long kick from Street found Mettam in a good position. With Hayes defender Joe Dabayo looking like he would deal with the threat, the big defender slipped and allowed a clear run on goal for the Linnets captain to fire past Wells for a share of the points.
