Ryan Walker in action for West Norfolk during their defeat at Ely.

RUGBY UNION: A second-half fightback fell agonisingly short for West Norfolk in London League Three North East at Ely.

Facing the newly-promoted hosts, Wests sat back in defence and, despite some stout tackling, found themselves a try down.

The Eastern Counties One champions continued to attack effectively and notched two more two tries to go 17-0 clear.

In the closing stages of the first half, Wests suddenly shot into life and second row Yousef Edris came within an inch of scoring.

Building on that, Wests controlled the second half with some great breaks by fly-half Michael Hogan and debutants Ollie Short – the Adrian Flux man of the match, Piers Fountaine and Quinton Houston.

The pressure told when centre Stephen Asprey broke through to score. Another long period of attacking possession saw Ryan Walker and Rory O’Sullivan make good yards before Edris crashed over to close the gap to 17-10.

Wests threw everything at Ely but were unable to secure anything more than a losing bonus point.

  •  King’s Lynn’s Jack Trundley helped Wisbech Grammar School to a 14-10 win over Wymondham College with two tries.

Another Lynn pupil scored for the school’s u13s with Callum Duncan contributing to a 40-25 win at King’s Ely.
