ROLLER HOCKEY: A Downham Market roller hockey player is heading for Spain as part of the England under-17 team.

Josh Horn, 16, a pupil at Downham Academy who plays for King’s Lynn Roller Hockey Club, has been selected for the national team at the championships in Mieres from September 4 -10.

The squad flies to Portugal on Sunday for six days preparation before travelling to Spain for the championships.

England will play in the opening game against Spain, directly after the opening ceremony and Horn has been named as vice-captain for the tournament.

He has played roller hockey for the Lynn club since he was six and started on the road to the Euros two years ago with the England Development Squad.

That involved monthly training weekends in Peterborough, playing competitive matches in the senior national leagues and training trips to Portugal where the game is played at a professional level.

The England team make regular trips to Feira, just north of Porto, where they train on full size rinks and compete against Portuguese clubs.

The national team will be hoping that experience proves advantageous in the weeks ahead as they take on the continent’s best teams.
