An investigation has been launched into the death of a former Litcham High School pupil whose body was found in a ditch in Spain.
Sam Alger, 25, of Necton, had been to a nightclub in Barcelona and was last seen at around midnight on Sunday.
He was reported to have run from the club into fields to avoid fighting which had broken out.
It is understood he had been at the club with his brother and friends who raised the alarm when they were unable to contact him.
Mr Alger worked as a performance analyst in Qatar for the Qatar Stars League football association.
A ‘Find Sam Alger Missing in Barcelona’ appeal was launched on the social media site Facebook by concerned friends, who also posted the news that his body had been discovered on Tuesday in a water-filled ditch.
“We are devastated to announce he was dead at the scene found drowned. No one can quite believe what has happened and everyone is truly heartbroken,” said the post (pictured)
“Sam was one of the kindest most genuine and loving people anyone could wish to know and to have him taken from us is truly heart-breaking,” it added.
Mr Alger’s body was discovered in a drainage canal in Viladecans on the outskirts of Barcelona.
It is understood family members travelled to Spain earlier in the week to join in the search.
Police in Spain are investigating the circumstances of Mr Alger’s death and a post mortem will be carried out.
A spokesman for the Foreign office said yesterday: “We are providing support to the family of a British national who has sadly died in Barcelona.”
