Residents cheered as Downham Market led the way with St George’s Day celebrations yesterday.

Re-enactments took place in the town as children from Hillcrest Primary School and Nelson Academy got involved in the fun.

Mayor John Doyle said the town square, which was decked out with flags, had a great atmosphere.

He said: “The children were all cheering on St George, and even some of the older generation were too.  We managed to frighten to dragon back into the lair.”

Town councillor, Frank Daymond, said he enjoyed playing the part of the dragon.

“They killed me,” he joked.  “It went very well and a lot of people were there. It’s important to celebrate St George’s Day.”
