HOCKEY: Pelicans u12 girls are through to the England Hockey Regional Finals after finishing second in the Norfolk County finals at Lynnsport.
Pelicans beat Dereham 4-1 and Norwich Dragons 3-0 before a 0-0 draw with Norwich City set up a winner-takes all encounter with Harleston Magpies.
The South Norfolk side won 2-0 but Pelicans finished second overall to book their place in the regional finals on April 19.
Due to injury and other commitments, the team had two new players with Kate and Megan Willis making their debuts.
Izzy Pope scored the day’s first goal and added two more before setting Mia Moore up for the fourth goal against Dereham.
A fine solo goal saw Poppy Beales open the scoring against Norwich Dragons with Moore and Pope wrapping up things.
The third game was against an older more experienced Norwich City side. Pelicans appeared a little fazed by their opponents, possibly having been 2-0 up a week earlier only to draw 2-2.
City set the pace and Pelicans were unable to dictate play, resulting in a frustrating 0-0 draw with some frantic defending and a limited number of attempts on goal. An injury to Beales did not help the home cause.
Harleston took the lead in a scramble in the final game and doubled their advantage from a clinical attack to secure top spot.
The Manager’s Player of the Day award was given to goalkeeper Lucy Sagrott who was outstanding throughout.
