Campaigners have started an online petition which calls for the government to back a public inquiry into a proposal to build on a King’s Lynn site.

Members of LARA (Lynnsport Area Residents’ Association) launched the petition on Monday on the campaigning website, 38 Degrees.

The petition will canvas support to ask Eric Pickles, the Secretary of State for Communities, to call a public inquiry into the proposal by West Norfolk Council to build homes on the Lynnsport site and create a new link road with Edward Benefer Way.

Last month, the borough council agreed to go ahead with its proposal and backed a planning application.

As well as the online petition, LARA has produced its own vision of how the area could be  developed.

This has been based on a garden village-style project with homes, landscaping and significant areas of green space.

LARA’s chairman, Stuart Hall, said if the Lynnsport development was to go ahead, objectors wanted a say in shaping it.

“LARA is attempting to look at options for shaping this development in a more creative and proactive way that allows everyone to create a win, win approach, which will allow the people to gain something interesting, rather than just a housing estate,” said Mr Hall.

He added: “Just to make it clear, we still think this whole project is fatally flawed and has no public support and we would rather it was dropped.

“However, if the people of Lynn have to suffer this, it would make sense that more creative and interesting designs are investigated fully.”

To have this kind of input, LARA would need to establish a neighbourhood forum and the next step for the committee is to gauge public support to set up a Lynnsport Area Community Neighbourhood Forum.

This would be a properly constituted organisation, Mr Hall explained, which could create a community-based plan.

He added, the image which has been produced was just a starting point and LARA now needed to canvas interest in the neighbourhood forum.

The group also plans to set up a Facebook page, Lynnsport Alive Plan (LAP).
