Managing Director Ben Colson

Former MD of the popular Norfolk Green bus company, Ben Colson, received the ultimate accolade of the Award for Services to the Bus Industry – a recognition of a lifetime’s achievement in the industry at the 2014 UK Bus Awards.

The annual awards recognise and reward the achievements of the bus industry. The winners were announced  at a star-studded ceremony at the London Hilton  Hotel on Tuesday, November 18.

Mr Colson, pictured at an earlier awards night, started his career with the National Bus Company more than 40 years ago, before joining Stagecoach. In 1996 he co-founded Norfolk Green –  based in Kings Lynn and covering Norfolk and parts of Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire.

He built up an award-winning business – Top Independent Operator in 2013 – achieving record growth.

Congratulating all the winners, UK Bus Awards chairman Tony Depledge commented: “In my first year as Chairman of UK Bus Awards, I’ve been delighted to see at first hand so many great projects from bus operators and local authorities.

In their citation for the industry’s top accolade for an individual, the management committee that organises the awards said:  “Throughout his career, Ben has been an inspirational leader, believing passionately in the future of our industry.”

They went on to praise his leadership  by example, which enabled him to build a highly successful, multi-award winning company, in the process advancing the cause of high-quality rural transport. “He has campaigned tirelessly for the industry, regularly undertaking speaking engagements and lectures to a wide range of different audiences.”

Theceremony was hosted by BBC News Presenter Jane Hill and guest of honour, Sir Peter Hendy CBE, President of the International Public Transport Union (UITP) and Transport Commissioner for London, presented the awards.
