A ‘supermum’ red squirrel at a conservation centre has stunned wardens by producing her 48th kitten.
Seven-year-old Tortoiseshell, has proved to be one of the Pensthorpe Conservation Trust’s greatest success stories, giving birth to 48 kittens since 2008.
There was concern Tortoiseshell might not breed again after her partner, Tweedledum, died in 2012.
But, with her new partner, Bryn, she has produced three new kittens.
Tortoiseshell and Bryn are one of two active breeding pairs at Pensthorpe Natural Park near Fakenham.
