A fundraising couple from Magdalen are  pulling on their walking boots and preparing to walk the 85-mile length of Hadrian’s Wall.

Starting on Monday, David Coles and his wife Sarah will be walking from Wall’s End in Newcastle Upon Tyne to the Solway Firth on the west coast to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Care.

Mr and Mrs Coles are no strangers to long-distance walks having completed a number of other challenges, including a 200-mile Highland hike from Glasgow to Inverness in 2012 and a 190-mile coast-to-coast walk the year before.

Their 2012 walk raised more than £850 for the British Heart Foundation and they hope to raise even more for Macmillan Cancer Care.

Mr Coles, who has just taken up a new position with Boots Opticians, opening a new practice in Ely, said:  “In 2012 my father sadly died of an illness related to his heart condition, but also a number of years ago my mother died of cancer, so this one’s for her, and all those affected by this disease.

“I would like to thank Boots for their support –  we opened the new practice yesterday and I disappear on the Saturday!”

The couple hope to complete their latest challenge in five days.

Mrs Coles, a primary school teacher in Ten Mile Bank, added: “While it isn’t every wife’s idea of a holiday, it does give us time alone together, plus it’s difficult to raise money lying on a beach – though I’d be prepared to give it a try!”

Macmillan Cancer Care provides people with practical, medical and financial support and campaigns  for better cancer care.
