The Downham Games are returning this year and the event is set to be bigger and better than ever before.

Frances Rayner, village games sports coordinator, said she was overwhelmed by the amount of support being shown for the event in May.

Additional funding has been made available from both the town council and the sports council along with private sponsors.

“I had people approaching me this year to help out, which is fantastic and really shows how valued the event is becoming in the community,” said Mrs Rayner.

The Ryston Runners, Active Norfolk and Downham Market Leisure Centre are also supporting the event, along with  a group of volunteers.

The games are designed to be very much for families and the local community.

Mrs Rayner and Aaorn Roberts, rural sports developer at Active Norfolk, visited the Downham Academy to talk to students about the event.

“It enabled us to gather ideas and views from probably the largest community within Downham Market and to find out how we can work collaboratively to make the games a success. We were really impressed with the ideas that came forward and learnt a lot from their opinions,” said Mrs Rayner.

Peter Duhig, one of the founders of the games, said it was a friendly competition for the community to take part in.

The games will be held on the Memorial Fields, Lynn Road, on Sunday, May 25 and start at 10.30am.

Sports taster sessions will run from 11am to 1pm and will include archery, golf, cricket, croquet, squash, football and tennis.

The main theme of the games is the athletics event which can be entered as a competition or just for fun. It is open to anyone over the age of eight and it is £1 for children and £2 for those over 17. The athletics starts at 11am and includes six events. Everyone taking part will receive a medal and there are winners’ trophies.

The games are on Facebook and more information is available from Mrs Rayner on 0780 2448836.
