Local businesses are hoping to batter each other on Shrove Tuesday at a fun pancake race in King’s Lynn town centre.

Organised by the Vancouver Quarter, the revived event is being sponsored by Sainsbury’s.

The store has offered a £100 community fund prize for the winning team and will provide the pancakes and frying pans on the day.

The race starts at 12.30pm  in the Vancouver Quarter in front of the bandstand and will be a relay around the nearby ornamental globe and back.

The six teams taking part are from Your Local Paper, New Look, Wilkinsons, Beales, KLFM and Sainsbury’s.

Each team has four runners.

It promises to be flippin’ good fun and it is hoped shoppers and colleagues will support the teams.

Ian Skinner, marketing and events assistant for the Vancouver Quarter, said the idea was to keep it a low-key event for this year due to space and also to see what response it attracted.

If all goes well, the aim is for the pancake race to possibly become an annual event.

“It will be fun. Obviously, the generous donation from Sainsbury’s gives everyone some impetus. The fact that there is a community fund means whoever is the winner can choose their charity,” said Mr Skinner.

Sainsbury’s is also providing an engraved frying pan trophy for the winning team.
