MOTOR SPORT: A blown engine in qualifying dealt Sam Smith a blow in his hopes of capturing the 750 Motor Club Championship.

The Downham Market racer was one of four drivers in with a chance of lifting the trophy going into the final weekend of action after nine rounds and 20 races.

The blown engine meant a late Saturday night putting in the spare engine ready for racing the next day. Despite starting 21st on the grid, Smith stormed through the field to come fourth.

In the next race, Smith finished sixth to claim fourth place overall in the championship, with five fastest laps and 12 podium finishes.

That left him by far the top privateer of the championship.

Smith thanked his sponsors West Dereham Plant Ltd, GA Services, Fusion Composites, Wave Window Cleaning and Steve Hart Restorations.
